General Computing in the Law Library

 

The Law Library is completely wired for computing at all reading carrels, general study tables, study rooms and the atrium lounge seats. If you bring your own laptop to the library, you must have an RJ 45 network cable in other to connect to the internet. Your laptop must also have a network card. Once you are on the network, you may print to any of the library printers. The Information Technology Department (IT) provides assistance with configuring students personal laptops to work in the library.  They can be reached by calling the IT helpdesk at  (202) 806 -8013, Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Computer Labs

 

There are three computer Labs in the Law Library, consisting of state of the art equipments,  and resources.  The workstation re powered by Widows 2000 and provide access to a variety of software.   Each lab is unique in its own way, providing access to much needed research, email, legal databases, news, word processing and  to  a wide range of information.

 

The Main Computer Lab

 

The main lab is located on the first floor of the Law Library.  The Lab is equipped with  20 Dell OptiPlex GX 400s, Pentium 4, 50 gig hard disks, 526 meg with Floppy Disk, CD/DVD combo, and a Zip drive for saving large documents.  This is a significant improvement from the old library with Dell 386 running on low memories,  There are four Mac 4 workstations for the MAC lovers, with ..... Each workstation is configured to print directly to either of the three printers in the lab with additional access to Westlaw and Lexis Printers. 

Software available to students include:

ADA Lab
The ADA Lab is located on the second floor of the law library, in room 212. This lab is specially designed to meet the needs of visually impaired patrons.  The workstation is set up with JAWS, a software that reads information off the computer for the visually impaired.  It can read off the email, the internet or from any research databases, including Lexis and Westlaw.  A Braille printer is set up to print documents in the Braille format.  Another software known as Docuprint, is installed to convert text to Braille.  The Lab also has OPEN Book, a software that scans text and reads it to the visually impaired person.  The lab is highly sophisticated and as such is limited to persons that are confirmed to be visually impaired and are approved by the school to use it.  For further information, please enquire at the circulation desk or speak with the Electronic Services Librarian.

 

Research Lab

The Research Lab is located in room 313 and is specially dedicated for research and training.  Lexis and Westlaw will conduct training sessions from time to time in this room.  Therefore, students should expect to be bumped out of the room when it is needed for training.  General web surfing and email checking are not allowed in this room.  The library provides a general computer lab downstairs and also check out labtops for use in the library.

 

The library support and value the need for research as an integral part of the students education in the Howard University Law School.  As part of this value, the Law Library provides a separate lab on the third floor which is dedicated primarily for research using the Library tools, Lexis and Westlaw.  The main computer lab is dedicated to general computing, email and Internet during, while the  research lab is dedicated mainly to research activities.  The lab consists of thirteen workstation of the same quality as the ones in the main computer lab, with same capabilities and attributes.  This lab is available when the library is open and is managed by he Lexis and Westlaw research assistants (reps).

 

Both Lexis and Westlaw provide dedicated printers for their software and assistance to students in the lab.  The names of the student assistants name and schedule are posted on the bulletin board in the lab.  The reps are responsible for toner cartridges, paper, and the smooth running of the lab. They may be contacted  for paper jams, toner replacement, and help with either Lexis or Westlaw products.  Lexis and Westlaw also provide direct phone help lines dedicated to their 24 hours professional lawyers.  The lawyers provide research guidance.  Each proprietary phone box is located by the vendor's printer, Lexis by Lexis printer and Westlaw by Westlaw.


Login Names and Passwords
All Law student, faculty and staff are assigned unique Network ID and passwords for general computing in the Law School. The same ID is used for emails and for networking. Username and Passwords are distributed by the Information technology staff.  Each student is assigned his/her own username and password during orientation.  If you have any problems with your password or have forgotten your password, you may consult the It staff via the help desk number. Students, Faculty and Staff are expected to activate their HU Network username/password and change their passwords every 120 days or every semester.  If you need help changing your passwords, you may contact the IT help desk.

 

Lexis and Westlaw require Special Passwords or IDs.  These are generated by the vendors and distributed through the school.  IDs for Lexis and Westlaw are distributed during the first semester and becomes fully effective after a student has completed the First Year Lexis and Westlaw training provided by the School.  IDs for Lexis and Westlaw may be obtained from the Electronic Services Librarian at (202) 806-8036.  If you are new to the school, or have misplaced or forgotten  your Lexis or Westlaw ID, feel free to call or email Electronic Services.
 

Computer Assisted Legal Instruction  (C.A.L.I)

C.A.L.I lessons are available on the web at http://www.CALI.org.  The password for CALI is learnthelaw.  CALI lessons are available on all the computers in the library, including the laptops.
 
Printing in the Law Library
There are printers on virtually every floor of the library. You may choose to print to the printer on the floor in which you are working or to any printer of your choice.  Beginning the fall of 2003, a new print system is going to be introduced in the law library.  You will be fully informed of the changes as they occur.
 

Eating and Drinking

Eating or drinking  are not allowed in the law library computer lab. Food crumbs or drinks can invite rodents as well as damage the computer hardware, especially the mouse and the keyboards.  If you must dint at all, you must use the non-skid cups supplied by the library.  See circulation assistants for help.

 

Security

There is a twenty four hour, seven days a week security for the Law Library.  Library security personnel reserves the right to conduct ID checks on all patrons at any given time.

 

Noise

The architectural design of the library makes it easily susceptible to noise.  It is highly expected that library patrons maintain an atmosphere of quiet in the library.
