INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The Law Library maintains formal agreements with libraries worldwide to share materials with, or provide photocopies to, other libraries. This service is available to Howard Law School students, faculty and staff only.

Circulating books and photocopies of articles are easy to obtain from most lending libraries, but the following types of materials are not loaned: an entire volume of a journal, periodical, reporter, code or digest cannot be requested, though individual articles or pages can be; rare books; loose-leaf volumes; volumes from a multi-volume set, or reference material.

Requests are processed Monday - Friday, except holidays. Most photocopies are delivered within 3 working days and most books are delivered within 10 working days. However, delivery can take significantly longer, depending on the availability of the materials and the response time of lending libraries.

Before you request materials
The first step in finding the research materials you need is to search the Law Library catalog, Daniel. The next step is to search the University Library catalog, Sterling. You can use your Capstone card to borrow materials directly from any of the participating libraries in the Howard University system: Architecture, Business, Divinity, Founders/Undergraduate, Health Sciences or Social Work. If you can't find what you need in our libraries, you may borrow materials through Interlibrary Loan.

To submit interlibrary loan requests
Come to the Interlibrary Loan office in Room 210, or send an e-mail to ill@law.howard.edu. To aid lending libraries in quickly finding the materials you need, please provide as much of the following information as you can for each request:

For Books:
  • Title
  • Author's full name
  • Publication place and date
  • Edition, series, and volume number
  • Where it was cited
For Articles in Journals:
Photocopies may be requested in accordance with copyright law (Title 17, U.S.C.)
  • Title of article
  • Author's full name
  • Volume number, year, and page numbers
  • Where it was cited
Also Helpful:
  • If the edition you seek is unavailable, will any edition suffice?
  • If a charge is imposed by the lending library, how much are you willing to pay to borrow this item?
  • What is the date to cancel the ILL request if not yet filled?

Picking up and returning materials
You will be contacted by e-mail when your materials arrive.

Interlibrary loan materials should be picked up promptly from the Interlibrary Loan office in Room 210 during Interlibrary Loan office hours, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Any items not picked up within a week of notification will automatically be sent back to the lending library.

All borrowed materials should be returned to the Interlibrary Loan office on or before the due date, which is clearly indicated on each item.

Please be aware that the lending library sets the terms and conditions of the loan, including renewals, and loan periods are strictly enforced. Requests for extension of a loan must be submitted to the Interlibrary Loan Librarian one week before the due date.

Noncompliance with lender terms and conditions may result in the termination of Howard Law School's interlibrary loan privileges. Because such noncompliance jeopardizes ILL reciprocal arrangements for everyone in the law school, please be diligent about returning materials by the due date.

Questions?
Inquiries about Interlibrary Loan policies or the status of your requests should be addressed to Felicia Ayanbiola, Interlibrary Loan Librarian, at 806-8207, or by e-mail at ill@law.howard.edu.
