Continuity of Services: Library Services

This guide covers: HUSL Library services, student and faculty resources, and coping with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Continuity of Library Services

Welcome to the Law Library

As Dean Holley-Walker announced in her email to the HUSL community, the law school campus will reopen on Monday, August 17th. Law students are welcome to take advantage of selected spaces in the beautiful, award-winning library along with other spaces on campus. Excluding holidays and university closures, the Law Library will be open Monday - Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm until further notice.

In order to manage on campus capacity and ensure the de-densification of our spaces during this time, the law school is deploying a new Seats Reservation System. All law students who would like to study on campus are encouraged to consult the Seats Reservation page and reserve a seat for themselves before making the trip to campus. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we integrate this new reservation system into our campus management workflows. As with all new systems, we appreciate your feedback and will make adjustments as needed. Send any questions you have about our hours and the new reservation system to reference@law.howard.edu.

As with all spaces on the Howard University campuses, appropriate precautions for COVID-19 will be followed for the safety and protection of the entire community — including wearing masks at all times in the Law Library and other spaces on campus.

As we begin a new and unique experience this semester, the Howard University School of Law Library staff are happy to welcome you and support your success this semester and in the years to come!

UPDATES

We recommend checking this site periodically for the most current information and resources available to you.  We will update it as we identify commonly asked questions and locate additional resources.  We will continue to post timely updates on our social media (Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / Instagram).

ACCESS

In an abundance of caution, and in compliance with D.C. guidelines, the university has prioritized decreasing the number of individuals on campus to the extent possible through dedensification this summer. The Law Library, along with the Howard University campus, will remain closed for the summer.  The Howard University is scheduled to reopen in the fall and the reopening plan can be found online. The Howard University School of Law is scheduled to reopen for online instruction beginning August 17, 2020.  Excluding holidays and university closures, the Law Library will be open Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until further notice.

To streamline access and better serve you during this unpredictable and rapidly evolving period, HUSL community members are encouraged to send all questions to our reference@law.howard.edu email.  This will be monitored during regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm) and will allow us to triage questions more efficiently.  To familiarize yourself with the physical library space, virtual tour of the library can be found here.

RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS

To schedule a consultation with a law librarian to discuss a research project or for assistance accessing library resources, please email reference@law.howard.edu and include your availability.  We will do our best to accommodate your schedule or find a mutually workable time to meet.  All appointments will be scheduled using Zoom.

FINES & DUE DATES

No overdue fines will be assessed for any Law Library items that were due March 14, 2020 or later.  All due dates for these materials have been automatically extended to August 30, 2020.

Please note that other libraries have instituted similar policies, but they may vary.  If you believe you have items that may have been borrowed from other libraries, or you aren't sure, please check your "My Library Account" or email reference@law.howard.edu for assistance.

RETURNING ITEMS

The library has book drops next to the main door and the parking lot door.  Due to the current stay-at-home orders in place, these book drops are not being actively monitored while the library is closed.  Any questions about the status of a book you dropped off should be directed to reference@law.howard.edu.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

Consortium Loan Service and Interlibrary Loan Service for print materials have been temporarily suspended.  Our law librarians are happy to help you locate relevant journal articles, eBooks, or other materials in electronic format.  To submit a request, email reference@law.howard.edu and include as much citation information as possible.
